Patient Preparation
To increase the likelihood of collecting an adequate sweat specimen, sweat chloride testing can be evaluated in asymptomatic newborns with a positive newborn screen result when the infant is at least two weeks of age and weighs >2kg. In symptomatic newborns (e.g. those with meconium ileus), sweat chloride can be evaluated as early as 48 hours after birth if an adequate sweat volume can be collected, although the likelihood of an inconclusive result may be greater at this age.
Instructions for Collection and Transport
This test must be scheduled with laboratory 24 hours in advance. After scheduling an appointment with the lab for an OUTPATIENT, the test should be ordered in EPIC system. The patient should then present at the Laboratory Registration check-in desk at the prescheduled time. This test is only performed at Ochsner Pediatrics and Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport.
COLLECTION LIMITATIONS: Outpatients must report to and remain at the laboratory for the duration of testing – approximately one hour.
PEDS LAB - Appointments are available Mondays and Wednesdays 9:00am – 1:00pm . This test is collected by laboratory personnel or respiratory therapist only.

Storage Requirements:
PEDS LAB - The stability of the specimens is affected by evaporation, so analysis is usually immediately after collection. If there is a delay in testing, the sweat should be transferred to specimen cups and tightly capped. Specimens that are not tested within 8 hours of collection must be tightly capped in a 0.2 micro centrifuge tube and stored refrigerated at 2-8°C or room temperature and tested within 72 hours of collection.
