Instructions for Collection and Transport
Collect in air bag. Send to lab ASAP. Please note the collection time on bag. After collecting the fasting specimen, the patient is given 10 gms of lactulose orally. The remaining specimens are collected at timed intervals; every 15 minutes for up to 3 hours post lactulose administration. Ensure that the air collection bag is completely expanded. This test cannot be collected at remote locations.

Patient Preparation
1. The patient must be fasting for 12 hours (only water to drink) prior to the test and must remain fasting during collection.
2. Patients are not permitted to smoke, sleep, nor exercise vigorously for at least 1 hour before or any time during the test.
3. High fiber cereals and slow digesting foods such as nuts, seeds, beans, dairy products (except eggs) and some other fruits and vegetables are not to be consumed 24 hours before the test.
4. Note if patient is undergoing course of antibiotic therapy.
This test will take approximately 1.5 hours. The patient must remain in the waiting area for the duration of the test.
