Instructions for Collection and Transport

Gently express the nipple and subareolar area only using the thumb and forefinger. DO NOT MASSAGE OR SQUEEZE THE BREAST. Allow a pea-size drop of fluid to collect upon the nipple tip. Immobilize the breast and using the nipple, smear the material across a labeled glass slide. Immediately spray fix the slide or submerge in 95% alcohol.

NOTE Patient’s name and medical record number or date of birth must be written in pencil on frosted end of the slide. If more than one site is sampled, site specific identifying words must be present on appropriate specimen containers. Cytology Epic order must include the following information: source of specimen, patient clinical findings, prior treatment, and previous biopsy results. Transport at room temperture.
