Fine Needle Aspirates collected by a Pathologist or a Cytotechnologist and are performed between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM – Monday through Friday.

Instructions for Collection and Transport

Specimen is collected by physician and labeled with 2 patient identifiers and site identifying words.

NOTE Patient’s name and medical record number or date of birth must be written in pencil on frosted end of the slide. The aspirate is expelled onto a glass slide and gently smeared with another slide. Immediately fix slides using spray fixative or 95% ethanol for Pap stain. Additional slides can be air dried for Diff Quik stain. Any additional material can be expelled into Cytolyt. Use a clean, labeled, leakproof container for transport. If more than one site is sampled, site specific identifying words must be present on appropriate specimen containers. Cytology Epic order must include the following information: source of specimen, patient’s clinical findings, prior treatment and previous biopsy results. Transport at room temperature.
